as i understand it at least, its only worth monitoring the coolant level in the expansion bottle when the engine is stone cold... correct?

this is a well knwn issue.
Its been mentioned here and other furms for a while .
Mine failed the same way abuout a year ago.
The new tanks are still availabale from VW (well in Germany way).
To replace takes about 2 hours.
Make sure you have enough new coolant whilst your at it to replace the spills or replace the lot if its due.
Get a new cap at the same time and replace perished hoses to.

OK, well, i finaly managed to get it down to the garage today an up on the ramps,and the mechanic has said its leaking from both gaskets when its up to temp, and that its a big pricey job, but then he threw me a life line, in the name of 'K' seal, so fingers crossed that it works, it does say that it permenantly fixes head problems, so lets see, thanks for all your replys guys, and ofcourse im going to double check all the points made here, thanks again guys, and id truely be lost without this site......................
