Bloody steering column plastics

Post by Fin »

The steering column plastics on my bus are driving me bonkers.
I've refitted them time and time again to have them squeak against the steering wheel after 2 weeks
recently I kneed the bloody thing when jumping into the van a little over enthusiastically.
The little clippy bit is snapped off now
Took them off all together and all my problems are gone.
But now it looks shonky - all exposed wires
Has anyone else replaced the standard plastics with anything to tidy up the steering column?
I was thinking maybe a big heat shrink or some of that corrugated plastic wiring tidy stuff

I have same prob. I think the answer may be some kind of large diameter flexible corrugated pipe, slit down one side. Thats the way I'm going to go with it.

The large spring clip that clips onto the steering column broke off on mine so I made a small ally square that fits into the square recess on the plastic shroud and re-fitted it

By the way new shrouds aree still available from VW

My 'clippy bit' broke off but thankfully cleanly so I could superglue it back onto the shroud. To stop it riding up into the underside of the steering wheel I squeezed in the clip to make it hold a little tighter and put some duct tape around the section it clips over so it grips better. Been like that for a couple of months now and there is no squeaking from it.

Hmm, cheers for the tips.

Think I'll tidy up the wiring for now with corrigated cable tidys and spray the column black

Then I'll have a look at my plastics again when I've got more time - on top of the new alternator, welding, engine, wheel bearing I need to do first

The list never seems to get any shorter

I trimmed the plastic bit that squeaks against the steering wheel with a stanley knife, and it stopped the squeaking (which was driving me insane too!)

I've gone with the cable tidys and Spray route - looks pretty good actually - a bit sci-fi if I don't say so myself.
I'll pop some piccys up when I've got daylight on my side

Looks like something from a sci-fi B movie
