DIESEL STARTING (when warm too)

Post by "WEAZLECHIN" »

its always been the same but ive just igored it.
its never been a great starter on cold mornings, but if i leave the glow plugs on long enough it does go(lumpy) but it goes.
but even if i have been driving for an hour in summer and gone in a shop for instance, why do i still need to leave the glow plugs on to start it again?
its the only one ive ever drove thats needs the plugs glowing in all weathers..... has anyone cured a similar fault? :?

Does it run "lumpy" when starting from hot?

Are all the return pipes (black cotton covered ones) in good condition?
If they are perished fuel could "run" back to the tank leading to longer cranking times when starting.
Mine did this for a time until I replaced the pipes.

Yes, ...or,

plain & simple low/poor compression.
It certainly is rare to need the glows when that hot though!

They also control the injection pattern, so if badly eroded might be another reason they need to be on.

Experiment! I suppose checking/replacing all 4 glows + a compression test might reveal the answer
If its cyl 3 or 4 suspect gasket or bad cracks in head
