For crying out loud girls, is there anything involving animals that you don't object to?? How the hell is a few dogs running about cruel? It's not like they're chasing a fox or a stag and ripping it apart.........

Brendan, If its just a fun race with pets on the track chasing the lure without any money exchanging hands then all's good - i'd love to take Ned and Griff to a track for fun.
But if any betting or money is involved at all there is a far more sinister side to dog racing that results in many, many dogs being abused; tortured; killed; or dumped. To get one good racing standard dog then many, many litters are bred and disposed of like they are simply waste product
I'm not usually one to preach but this is something that I feel very passionately about
Maybe Ross could clarify whether these dogs are pets being put to a lure for fun by their owners or whether it is an organised race with money changing hands.

We're in the stickiest situation since Sticky the Stick Insect got stuck on a sticky bun. -hmmmmm
Err No Bren i think I object to everything , I don't eat them wear them take anything devrived from an animal use anything that is tested on animals including medication ,cosmetics or cleaning products (this I do to the best of my ability) for me it isn't the actual use of dogs for racing as much as what happens to them afterwards just google any greyhound rescue if you are interested , Although I am very militant of the subject of animal welfare I try not to preach but instead see myself more a voice for those who lack the ability to make an informed decision
a top band from worsop nr mansfield are feroucious dog they playstuff like pouges levellers saw doctors ect very jiggy and would make a top night out. i have no financial intrest in this band but have seen them and they are local. facebook feroucios dog
As Karen and Julie have said it's not so much about the racing but what happens to the dogs who race! Sorry Bren but I don't post very often so you cant say I object about animals all the time, however I am entitild to my opinion just like you are with yours about kids
evening folks, all opinions are welcome,i`ll put the record straight there is no money changing hands watsoever if there was i would be locked up by now as we dont have a licence to gamble with the dogs. These dogs are looked after with great respect and care and if they wer`nt i would be the first person to abolish this on our field. The people that own these dogs range from old ladies and children to very committed and proud individuals who come out in all weathers to watch their dogs race, and i can assure you all that the dogs throughley enjoy it,even my collie dog cluff has a go chasing the lure. They have to log every race and send it to the british whippet federation who keep an eye on all results so its monitored very closely, its def not big burely ex miners shouting and swearing and letting their dogs run amok. The lure is`nt an old dead bloodied hare, now no laughing, but its an old plastic bag shredded into strips that speeds up the field by a motor.I hope i`ve enlightened you as i`m no expert in whippet racing, and if you do come at the weekend and i hope you all do,the whippet racing club will gladly answer any queries you may have. Thanks a lot, hope to see you Ross

I'm not saying you do; I have just noticed that whenever a topic involves animals there seems to be an immediate and unfavourable reaction to it. I can easily understand (and agree with) peoples objection to certain activities that involve out and out cruelty to animals such as cosmetics testing or 'sport'; the way certain members of the public seem to be able to keep their domestic 'pets' in truly appalling conditions with little or no retribution from the law; the conditions some animals are kept in all their lives only to see the light of day at the gates to the slaughter house - and I'm a meat eater. It just seems that sometimes people object for no more reason than objection itself or jump to premature conclusions all the time.
Admittedly, I did not consider the possibility of a 'greyhound syndrome' being a factor here as I interpreted this as being a few dog owners having a day out and a laugh - which now seems to be exactly the case.
