Mystery roof leak

Post by foxley »

Another long term problem.
My 1985 Autosleeper hightop roof deleloped a leak some years ago. I only discovered the problem when the wardobe at the back started to smell damp and began to peel internally.
I pumped window sealant behind the large rubber seal at the back body/roof junction which seemed to solve the problem but whole exercise plays on my mind as my fix feels like a bodge.
Has anyone out there actually removed this seal at any time and what lays beneath?
How easy is it to re-attatch and fix.
Help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

check the external gutter ,hose the outsides and check for cracks ,the water must be coming in from the roof (top)or the gutter
it only takes a small hole in the sealant to give a big problem

If you have a tailgate wash/wiper check that the water hose isn't punctured or torn as this pipe runs directly above the wardrobe position. I had a tiny hole in mine and although the wash jet still worked against the window a fair proportion of the water gushed into the wardrobe area too.

I don't know why you posted your question in the 'Wanted' forum though

Well he 'wanted' help.

All the sealant around my hightop was perished, so much so that the cupboard above the cab broke off in my hand! Dug out as much sealant as I could from the outside and sealed again with sikaflex. Thought it would be a quick job but chuff me, digging out the old sealant was a real ball ache. All dry now though - and new cupboard!

The roof leak wsa a hole under the body/hightop rubber seal at the rear offside back,
The hole is perfectly clean on the seam, no rust at all.
I'm guessing the hole was there from the original Autosleeper conversion but was protected until the seal perished and lifted.
