New T25 owner - a question (more to follow im sure!!)

Post by fodtommo »

Although I ve owned loads of old vehicles and classics, ive finaly realised a hankering and bought my first campervan! and joined the 80-90club!

I have a strange problem - my van is a 1987 leisuredrive 1600 diesel.

It had a complete new engine from The Engine Shop in 07, and this was fitted with new everything - ancilliaries, fuel pump hoses etc for a grand supply and fit toal of £2.5k!! it has covered only 12k since.

it as a small oil leak when warm - there are 2 drips from the cambelt end of the engine, one appears to come from a pickup? pipe coming off the bottom of the sump, the engine has a cast alloy sump not the tin one in the manual. the other appears to be a leaking cam cover gasket dribbling down the side (creating that hot oil smell on the exhaust manifold on the way. are these common?

Also the manual shows a single fan belt in a triangle arrangement comprising waterpump, crank puley and alternator. Mine has 2 belts, one from the crank to the waterpump which has a double pulley, and then one from the waterpump to the alternator, almost above it. I can adjust the alternator one ok, but the bottom belt is slack but I dont know how to tighten it - i got some blank responses on Volkszone forums!

Thanks in advance - ill be back to wire up a lesure batery / zig unit, fit a night heater and let you know how I get on designing a fold away cot to go above the cab in the pop top for the youngest member of the family!

Welcome to the land of the T25. 1600 diesel does indeed produce a leisurely drive!

The pipe off the bottom of the sump sounds like the oil filler tube. Either the joint at the bottom needs tightening, or failing that resealing with a new gasket, or sometimes the tube can rust through, in which case it will need welding. Either way, best time to do it is same time as an oil change.

Oil leaks from cam cover are common. New gasket kits are cheap enough but need to be fitted carefully to be oil tight.

Your belt arrangement is quite standard. To adjust the water pump belt, the water pump pulley separates into two half shells by removing the three bolts. There are several shims in between. Remove shims and store them on the outside of the pulley to tighten the belt. You'll have to hold the pulley to slacken the bolts. I use a flat bit of metal hooked behind the next bolt head to prevent the pulley turning. Be careful not to bend the pulley flanges at all or belts will fail quickly. Get used to it, you'll be adjusting it quite often.
1.9D (AEF) pop-top. Aaaaahhhhh........that's better.

Thanks!!

I only have a little orange manual from just kampers that came with the van - will be tightening that belt right away. and yes it is a very leisurely drive, sometimes I have to find a reference point like a tree and check it passes the side window so I know im still movin... 1.9dt at some point methinks:)

Hello and welcome..
I would think that your 1600 diesel engine is very saleable should you ever consider a transplant, it would easily offset some of the cost of an AAZ.

this site is useful for standard type 2 vans. http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/vw/T2/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; on this page are the year builds, just click your year.
it lists VW part nos. so it's very useful for ordering the correct part from a dum ass motor-factor, always try VW first though.

You have to register to see the pictures
Have fun..
