thermostat help req

Post by ricicles »

ok guys, got a new black sender for the themo housing an a new stat. problem is that with the stat fitted the gauge goes to the far right, just a few mm from the white line, the top hose off the housing stays cool and the rad also is cool, engine is hot. although this is a new stat its not the only one i have had the same trouble with. more info is that the rad is new all the pipes are not blocked, its a late dg system but running twin dells so the coolant pipe that would have heated the old manifold is connected back into the thermostat housing. this all used to work. i have an old stat that i have chopped up so it.s now running without, if you know what i mean. the temp gauge now shows a more realistic reading, ie goes to the middle when ticking over( ten mins or so) and drops to the lower white line out on the road, also drops when heating put on. any idea,s?

thanks kev. i have made a bit of progress :D went to see paul at mid norfolk motor co and had a play with a nifty themometer. it has a lazer on it that you poit at whatever you want to test the heat of, so started by putting stat in water and firing the lazer( moo ha haha ) sure enough stat is ok as it was opening at 85 degrees, so put it all back in bled the system. tested the temp at the bottom of the thermostat, sure enogh it started to rise, as did the guage, at 84 the temp started to rise in the top of the housing so all is well. what threw me off was that the temp guage had the needle at the far right showing v hot. so i guess its the black sender that coud be a bit off? any thoughts? or should i have replaced the blue one as well? i thought that it was only used on the efi system.

black is dash, blue is temp2, maybe a bad connection on the sender - if you earth the sender wire (the one that isn't brown) the gauge will go to max and the light flash, ie the sender reduces resistance with temp - put a meter on the sender should bein the 2-3.5k ohm at air temp, ie cold
