My new T25 - How do I make things bloody work?

Hi all.

Now at the risk of sounding a numbnuts, I need to ask for your help..... I have bought a 1983 T25 Westfalia and Im happy with it. The kids are happy with it. Its great. But how do I get things working? The 12v lights in the back work but I cannot for the life of me work out how to switch on the erberspacher heating thing or the fridge anf the gas and the water pump?????????? First question, does all of the kit run off the standard battery or do you have to connect up a second leisure battery? Second Q, is there a manual to tell you what to do.

Any help really appreciated.

You will have two seperate batteries: Standard starter battery under the right side (passenger seat on a L/H/D and the second 'leisure' battery under the drivers left side (N/S) Well actually behind both seats.
Slide the seats forwards on their runners and there is a battery flap/hinged cover (the split charge relay is also next to the battery on the drivers side.
Standard Westy wiring has the 12volt rear interior lighting and radio running through the starter battery...god knows what Westfalia were thinking when they did this. Most owners carrier out a simple 15minute mod to have all the leisure consumers running off the leisure battery.

Note* two fuses/fuse holder on the drivers side B post, these power the fridge and ebberspacher and are often removed to stop the leisure battery from going flat when the van is laid up (I've fitted a master switch to mine to cut off this power when the van is not in use).

Do Westies start with a key or are they special?

After the initial euphoria of seemingly getting everything to work the heater has started to have a mad one! Everytime I turn it on now, it roars like a staem train and about 30 seconds in, a really annoying clicking sound starts and continues forever. The only way to stop it is to turn the thermostat down which stops the noise but seems to also drop the heat output by about 75%. Also, it stinks in the van, not from the exhaust fumes leaking in but more of a plasticy, rubbery smouldering smell . Any ideas?
