Slow Engine!!

Post by DUSTY100 »

Hi,
I've been out in my 1983 T25 a couple of times engine size 1600 and it seems very slow at times going up hills is this normal or am I just being too picky.
your thoughts would be most welcome.

Hiya, if it's an Aircooled 1600 then it really is slow, if it's a 1600 diesel then it's noisey and slow. it's what happens when you have a 2 tonne van with a chronically under-powered engine :( We have a 2.1 and can go up Slack in 3rd no worries and Chandler in 4th/5th.

and if it is a 1600 turbo diesel then it's noisy, a lot faster than the other two above but still pretty slow in comparison to a modern car/van

E D I T ...scratch that ...there was no turbo diesel in 1983

I think it is that I'm used to driving a car and usually able to nip up a hill without any probs, as for the noise it is very quiet and on the flat it gets to 50mph without any delay.

I have an 83 1.6CS and yes its slow! but you do get used to it I can manage 60ish on a flat but any slight hill will Knock it down to 50, any hill above slight and you are down to 40 with lots of revs! It can get interesting on the motorway when changing lanes, just make sure you indicate very early to warn people. a real important thing I have learnt is to check that the breaks are not binding or rubbing as they use a lot of energy also check the tyres are at the correct pressure, it amazing how low pressure tyres drag.

Good luck :ok
