Front wheel arch - rubber plug??

Post by folkers »

Quick question,

Does anyone know if there is any purpose for the rubber plug right at the bottom of the front drivers side wheel arch directly under the petrol cap?
I was thinking, well why would VW put it there if it wasn't needed but....

I'm just wondering, as I have had to weld a panel in there as it was corroded...obviously if the rubber isn't necessary I wont bother drilling a hole in my nice new panel for another rubber!

Does anyone know for sure if this plug serves any purpose apart from waxoyling?

Found a pic of roughly where the plug is (opposite side, and not my van by the way)

The plug is right at the bottom of the panel and is on the section in between the sliding door and the seam near the front door (I hope this makes at least some sense)

Just trying to decide what to do, before I begin painting it!

Its an interesting point that VW put this access point in place and the fact it is, there is for a reason for it. Infact there are lots of caps and points that should be able to be got to all over any T3 and there is a reason for every one of them. When you buy a camper that has been converted many of these points are covered over with units or stinky old carpet if it was some of the english convertors work. On a Westfalia, because of the direct affiliation with VW and all the extra special add ons to choose from for the different models, Multivan, Camper, Syncro etc the body shell was the same for all the model types and that is why they have access points all over and should be able to be got to regardless if you have a Westy camper or a panel van, unlike some english converted T3

Soooo the bung whats it for?

Simple, if it wasnt there how would you screw the bolts on the back of these VW Syncro mudflaps? of course you can get o them both sides in a Westfalia

Hope this helps,

Yeah thanks mate that does help a lot, and makes me feel a lot better for welding it up to repair the corrosion around it (basically fell off in my hand before repair!!)
