A Pierburg squared, equated and squared yet again ...

Post by scania530 »

... aka the 'dreaded Pierburg 2e2' ?

Hi Guys (and please forgive the alias) but my Work Toy REALLY does bend (but not quite in the middle)! The Wife has often passed comment .... Hmmm!
I am the VERY proud owner (obviously... aren't We ALL?) of a 1990, 1.9 Petrol Automatic, Autohomes Komet T25 that has, at times, broken my Will To Live and has also given swmbo the psychological advantage in the Thomas Cook Catalogue range of Superior Holidays. (In Her DREAMS!!!!!!)

Please forgive this little bleat - but, having been plagued for over a year with misfire/stall/backfire/loss of power problems (that were subsequently traced back to a water problem in the petrol tank that was, shall we say, 'gorgonzola-ish?) I had assumed the smugness of a T25 owner sans problemo! (Is that English, Spanish. French or VW?)

So I took swmbo up the Lakes, in the pouring rain, last weekend, just to prove to myself that the water/petrol mix was now at a premium.

Quelle Problemo? Zilch! Purred like a cat all weekend (and the van ran as sweet as a nut as well!) We even tried waterskiing! There is a straight stretch of road down the side of Coniston ... and I attached the rope to the tow bar and swmbo got into her leathers (DON'T!!!! ) and it was was going great ... Window down, Wig blowing around, Her on the Water Skis .... Trouble is - You have to do a sharp left at the end of the road and ... well ... Her Triple Salko plus Double Pike With Yowl into the brambles was given a resounding SEVEN!!!!!! by the crowd on the balcony of the local Hostelry!

Never did quite work that one out - but she refused to cook Dinner that! night and made me go and get some chips for my tea?

No pleasing some people is there!!?

Where Was I? Oh Yea .... hmmm .... the Divorce Court a week a Tuesday ... ermmm .....

Oh I remember!

T25's and Pierburg Carbs! Arrrrgh!!!

Is there a Pierburg Doctor in the House?

OK. Divorce aside.

I got into my cold van on Monday morning, pressed the accelerator pedal down to 'arm' the autochoke, turned the ignition key on after the light had gone out and she fired (as per usual) on the second or third turn. Purrrrrrfect. I let her idle fast for a couple of minutes to warm up and then 'blipped' the throttle to (semi?) cancel the choke. I drove a mile up the road to my local petrol station, (without a problem), turned her off, filled up, turned her back on and, as I pulled away from the garage pumps, she stalled. She started again immediately but I knew that she was 'hesitating' on acceleration as I rejoined the main road.

For the next 35 miles (on a variety of flat and hilly roads - think Lake District) she couldn't make her her mind up whether or not to accelerate or just 'hunt'. By 'hunting' I mean that, on a straight, flat road with my foot steadily on mid-accelerator, she would alternately 'pick up' and then 'back off', 'pick up and then 'back off', repetetively. If I put my foot down (past midway) she would take off as per usual but, the second that I eased off into a cruise she would go back to 'hunting mode'.

We got to work (and I am away all week) but I cannot help but wondering if I have been infected with the dreaded Pierburg Autochoke Problem?

Any and ALL comments would be appreciated Guys!!

PS ... Just for KevtheRev - You were spot on with the misfire problems! it WAS a leaky tank and water in the petrol after all!

Was going to suggest the fuel filter but that would have been changed with the tank. Worth a look though just in case the new tank had some stuff in it!

2E3...... I presume that the water in the fuel tank problem was sorted and the filter changed (large one near fuel tank) and the carb was cleaned out??? sounds like dirt/water in the carb.. worth checking the little gauze on the inlet pipe of the carb too...

Pump could be tired... never seen a worn pump pushrod mind.... (my 'velle has well over 300k km on it and the syncro 200k km..) but pumps do fail...

Of course.. all ignition components good and clean etc etc??
No vac leaks??

Sorry, I'm  too much to think straight about Pierburg chokes... which I know little about (well nothing really other than what I've read here

Have you consulted the GOITE (great oracle in the ether) (no, not SWIMBO), but...

one of these Wiki topics, possibly the one entitled Pierburg might shed a scrotum full of tears on the sad subject , but others in that range might shed light, I won't say suck it and see (oh hell, I have)

Dear Mr HarryMan .... or, as a VW God, should that be 'Your Holiness' (as in my previous petrol tank?)

Sad to say but, the last time that I encountered Goitre was as a mere child, (having been forced to watch several elderly Aunts trying to jump-start my grandads' wicker tricycle around the grounds of a 'Private Members Club' that seemed to be oriented towards partial Egyptian Mummification!)

Whatever!

I am in London now (Thursday Evening) and will be back into Lancaster tomorrow evening. I have thought about the 'Autochoke' thing all week and, could I pose a question? If I fire her from cold (it is a newish battery and will take it) WITHOUT arming the Autochoke, and she runs properly, all the way home, what diagnostics should I then follow?

You have three options .....

Phone a Friend
Phone a VW Mechanic
or...

Face the wrath of SWMBO.

Face the wrath of SWMBO.

The choke heater element is cafluggetted (I think)

Only trouble is I'm no VW God, (so probably wrong about the choke too), never liked them, especially the buses.. seems that I'm here through a misdeed in an earlier incarnation which was probably driving a newish '84 T3 panel van and actually enjoying it.

Ah... Oh! Well! Tried to Google 'cafflugetted' and, after severeal futile attempts, found myself on a rather obscure website which seemed to specialise in leatherette-clad nubiles doing rather strange things to each other! ..... and then SWMBO came back downstairs unexpectedly and .... Don't worry too much about it though - I gave ALL your details (as the site referrer) to the very nice policeman that called into the HDU of our local Hospital to take my statement (in Braille). The Consultant Maxilliary Surgeon has assured me that they can reconstruct my Jaw-Line and Social Services have promised that they will release SWMBO from the straight-jacket once the sedative has worn off and she stops biting lumps out of the wall! Hey Ho!!

Sorry that this is a short reply but now I know what Prof. Stephen Hawking has to put up with.

Yours mumbly,
