Engine runs on after taking keys out!
Mornin,
Has anyone encountered the problem of switching off your ignition, taking the keys out of the ignition and the engine continues to idle? Very strange. I have to stall the engine to stop it. I have a 1.6td JX engine and as far as I can see, the problem is called pre-ignition or over run.
Anyone ever encountered or have any ideas as to a solution
Cheers

Re: Engine runs on after taking keys out!
I discovered a while back that I can remove my keys with the engine running. Are you sure you're turning it right off

What a long strange trip it's been
Re: Engine runs on after taking keys out!
Ha Ha. Yes I turned the key all the way to the off position.

If not worn ignition barrel have you checked fuel stop solenoid on pump ?
Near where the metal lines exit back of pump-will have a 12v feed to it.
Pull off wire to check its not a wiring issue (ie staying live) and also leave wire connected but listen for solenoid click when key is turned to ignition live (but not trying to fire engine) - obviously need a helper for this!!

Can also be called PINKING, can be caused due to timing out, crap petrol etc, be worth getting it tuned up, used to have that on a capri, would run for ages then gasp and stop.

Shouldn't be any petrol in a diesel engine.

It's a d****l thing ... sounds like despite the pump being switched off (with the key) it's running on on either engine oil that's leaking into the system or d****l leaking in from somewhere.
I'm not a d****l guy but that's what happens on plant.

Re: Engine runs on after taking keys out!
I think its a diesel not a petrol? Maybe its dieseling?
"Dieseling is so-named because it is similar in appearance to how diesel engines operate - by firing without a spark. The ignition source in a diesel is the compression of the fuel in the cylinder rather than a spark as in gasoline engines. The dieseling phenomenon occurs not because the compression ratio is sufficient enough to cause auto-ignition of the fuel, but a hot spot inside the cylinder starts combustion. An automobile engine that is dieseling will typically sputter then gradually stop."

Re: Engine runs on after taking keys out!
Thanks for all your responses....I ended concluding that there is a carbon deposit build up which continued to burn (
yeh, like I should know!) I just got a bottle of stuff that cleans injectors, valves and pistons. Problem solved after adding to tank and a little run. Cheers

Re: Engine runs on after taking keys out!
well if it was running on carbon deposit build ups.
i'd start it up then switch it off and drive round on that.
should increasse your fuel economy by 99%

I call shennanigans on that one.
A diesel engine does not run on carbon build-ups, it either runs on oil or diesel.
If it were running on oil (from a broken turbo for example) it would also run ungoverned, meaning it wouldn't just idle but try to rev its nuts off.
So that only leaves diesel (through the normal supply). As yours kept on running it either had a faulty shut off valve, a faulty ignition barrel or some bad connections between the two. As it miraclously fixed itself now, my guess would be dodgy wiring/connections on their way out. It's working for now, but most likely the problem will re-appear.
