Re: Snapped front CV shafts!
Its interesting to note how many experts have written off the CV joint without any evidence whatsoever, it seems incredible that a company that has been trading for some time would compromise its market share by introducing inferior products on to the market.
We have used this product on our own vehicles ( used correctly off road) and never snapped one or heard of any other customer who has them experiencing failure.
Unfortunatley only half the story has been given, have you heard how the product was fitted or how the vehicle was being driven at the time....answer no you have not heard that on this forum.
AS the supplier I have explained to the customer that I will return them to interparts under the excellent interparts 2 year warranty.
When we hear back from interparts we will have the evidence we need to make an informed judgement on this rather than simply jumping to conclusions with no evidence.

Helluva post!
I was always under the impression good business was built on reputation and not by running others down

Re: Snapped front CV shafts!
you can't win here can you......I have tried to suggest a balanced view, taking in all the evidence should be applied rather than jumping to conclusions. I'm not running anyone down, its not in my nature to use a public forum to do that, I very rarely use forums for this very reason. However sometimes enough is enough.

Some of the people who have posted on this thread could justifiably be considered 'experts' with many years experience of breaking, fixing, modifying and using Syncros both on and off road. More importantly they contribute greatly to the 'greater knowledge' we have of the product here on this forum. There are many vehicles, both standard and modified, with huge mileages covered on this forum and we have never heard of this occurrence before. You are new to the world of the Syncro and it uses its own rule book. I would have thought that 'a company that has been trading for some time' would be glued to this and other forums that deal with Syncros, to get as much knowledge as possible, contribute and learn from the 'experts' that post here so as to enhance their business and the services to their customers. Having said that, I do remember you banging on about refurbing your own VCs. What ever happened there?

Yes it sure does .....!
SYNCROSPARESUK wrote:We have used this product on our own vehicles ( used correctly off road) and never snapped one or heard of any other customer who has them experiencing failure.
I really think you are getting your knickers in a twist here. Nobody is blaming you. I drive my syncro incorrectly and correctly off road and have never sheared a CV joint. There are some very big wheels/tyres fitted to syncros out there and they have not sheared CV joints and having attended a few events over the years most syncros are doing stuff that was never intended for them. Never heard of a CV joint shear off .....
SYNCROSPARESUK wrote:Unfortunatley only half the story has been given, have you heard how the product was fitted or how the vehicle was being driven at the time....answer no you have not heard that on this forum.
No we dont know how they were fitted but Id like to hear your views on incorrect fitting leading to two CV joints shearing. If you read the post properly and stopped jumping up and down like a kid who thinks he in trouble you would have read the bit where he says .... 'driving up and down some really steep gravel slopes using both lockers' .... So the guy was out having fun in his Syncro, doing possibly what we all do, and bang .... a very unusual breakage occurs. Two steel shafts shear off ...... that takes some energy to do that .... an awful lot of energy. Damn lucky his hubs didn't collapse .....
SYNCROSPARESUK wrote:AS the supplier I have explained to the customer that I will return them to interparts under the excellent interparts 2 year warranty.
According to their website http://interparts.com , it states the following ... "Interparts is an international corporation, with an administrative, R&D and distribution center in New York, sales office in Chicago, sales and distribution centers in the United Kingdom and has 4 manufacturing plants with R&D facilities, in China and 2 other affiliates supplying the automotive aftermarket." Basically these CV joints are of Chinese origin and this congers up a few things in my mind in relation to quality and Im sure others here would think similarly. Are you keeping a CV joint back for independent lab analysis? Are you going to compare one with a genuine one in a back to back lab analysis? That is the only way we will know if these joints are faulty.
'excellent interparts 2 year warranty' Whats excellent about that .... Lidl and Aldi offer 3 years warranty on the stuff they sell!
SYNCROSPARESUK wrote:When we hear back from interparts we will have the evidence we need to make an informed judgement on this rather than simply jumping to conclusions with no evidence.
That is possibly the most naive statement I have ever heard. How can you make 'an informed judgement' from the manufacturers report? Those joints will end up in the bin underneath a Sales Managers desk, you will be sent two joints (probably from the same batch) to replace the ones that broke along with some appeasement drivel written on company paper. Interparts are not going to go to the huge expense of testing those joints and neither will they pay for independent testing unless forced to.
Two CV joints of Chinese origin failed in a way none of us have heard of before ..... draw your own conclusion.

Re: Snapped front CV shafts!
Bit harsh there Syncropaddy, even if essentially technically correct. I can see SyncrosparesUK's p.o.v., especially as the retailer in good faith of the part.
Having said that, I too am a little suspicious that the manufacturer will not be able (or willing) to investigate, especially as they will no doubt see the usage as abnormal - just 'cos we dont think it is wont convince them. There is some history of problems with goods manufactured in China...think kids toys with toxic paint, milk powder with melamine in it...as well as lots of good quality parts and I'll bet they dont keep the test logs.
It seems likely that the joints were incorrectly manufactured given the identical place and nature of the failure and the almost simultaneous time from new that it took - anything else would be an improbable set of coincidences.
It would be good to see a photo of the break, surface and side...

Do you think so? I dont mean to be harsh but its fair. In reality if Syncrospares had said nothing then I would have said nothing as well Sometimes damage limitation exercises can make things worse

Re: Snapped front CV shafts!
Just a point to add on supply situation from China.
We (Bentley motor) will not source some types of parts from China because they will not garentee the material source.
From discussion with our purchasing department over the last few year I have been told that the Chinese steel mills make huge batches of one type of steel at a time, as directed by central government. This lead to the part manufactures useing what every is avalable at the time to complete orders.
As a result of this situation we usual source safety critical parts within Europe, purly because it give traceability from material to manufacture.
As Syncropaddy say I dont think anyone here is blaming the retailer.

Re: Snapped front CV shafts!
My wifes uncle used to work (subcontract) for Goodridge/Lockheed/LuK etc etc . He used to travel the world sourcing manufacturers/factories to make parts.
I cannot remember how the system worked exactly but the jist was the factory made X amount of samples at the bidding stage.
Some of the stories he has to tell about some middle/far eastern factories bids is unbelievable. There is one story of note where a sample is produced(in India) and it still has a half complete drinks can pull ring in the pressing/metal (I think the one about the clutch disc being made of compressed grass/goat poo was an exageration but thats what he compared to fibre plates to!)
Maybe stuff is being made to a price not a quality ........................

Re: Snapped front CV shafts!
world greed rears its ugly head.
too many things are being made badly these days and good parts are getting harder and harder to source.
you haven`t got to look to far from this forum to see how much effort is being put in to having quality replacement parts re made.

The fact that the CV joints failed is not Syncrospares' fault. They sell a product range and this particular bit of the range has failed. They are putting this right by sorting the issue with the customer. Good for them. If I was them I'd be replacing the CVJ's with OEM ones and if I was the customer I'd be checking the state of the hubs and wheel bearings.
What got me inspired to write was their response which I felt was ill conceived, naive and unnecessary at this time. This post would have died down and disappeared like most posts do, instead by their intervention, its up the top of the list! To my mind, Syncrospares in its current incarnation is still, in the greater scheme of things, relatively inexperienced with things 'Syncro' and if it were me being new to the game, I'd be watching, listening and learning what the Syncro world is doing and how it has got to where it is now.

Correct and we all know what a fine job he is doing
Thank you for the complimentary PMs I have received on this subject.

Re: Snapped front CV shafts!
i am wondering what would be concidered unacepatble use for the cv joints? i accept that they are a wearing item but what sort of mileage should we be expecting. on this note i have got to change some vc boots again, which i changed when i bought the van, they are on the rear and have done about 25k and are rubber/plastic is cracking.

Re: Snapped front CV shafts!
I reckon that's not bad going, considering the use yours gets. Did you buy pukka VW ones? Some replacements can be a bit hard and inflexible when compared to OEM.
I had one split on the front end of the Audi at around 45k but I've no way of telling if that was an original one or a replacement. All the others were ok.
