Pushrod Guards

Pushrod Guards
Both left and right hand side pushrod guards have rotten through , do these have to be replaced or is it ok to leave them off ? If they need to be replaced any idea on who would stock them ?

VW didn't put them there for the fun of it ... have a stone or some road debris take a pushrod tube out + lost oil = blown engine + assume the position
