just fix your carb and get the engine set up properly.

these will never be fab on petrol no matter what you do.

five speed boxes wouldn't help either.. the final drive is pretty much the same as your fourth.
You can have a lower ratio 4th gear fitted and it would drop the rpm 5oo revs .. but you'd have to change up earlier for hills.

By the sound of it LPG is a very viable way to reduce your fuel costs without losing power and usability

I've got a Pierburg that has a working choke (in fact a new unit that I put on) and has been recently rebuilt. I had thought there was something wrong as I have a flat spot on acceleration and bought another carb that i knew to have been professionally rebuilt- the outcome was i fitted the 'prof' carb and had the same symptom which means in my formulation that my problem is not carb but ignition/fuel , other. mine's a 1.9dg but the previous owner has put a sloex on it. not quick - i cruise at about 55mph - but returns 27-29mpg on a run.

I accept that's right it just doesn't make sense. The 4-speed is pretty nicely spaced, a long 5th on top would have been way better than a closer-spaced 5-speed with pretty much the same final drive. Oh well, I won't bother with that route then! Thanks for the info, saved me mucho trouble.

If you move up to a 2.1 it is common practice to use the DG manifold and carb, as the 2.1 gives the van much needed power (30+ bhp) Then a longer fourth gear makes more sense, I have a DG box on my 2.1 and it is wanting a longer fourth.

Aiden fitted one to shepsters 2.1 recently, and his fuel consumption has dropped, especialy on longer trips.

Fuel injection.. nope you wont see any improvement to be fair... the std Fi isnt very sophisticated so wont improve mpg..

A carb rebiuld and full setup of carba and engine and how you drive make all the difference.. but what are you using it for? short town trips?
Around town/short trips.. 18mpg... on a run 24, maybe 26/27 if you drive like an absolute saint and its set up properly...

Short trips and runs up the motorway to work. 57ish mph and foot down when I need to overtake. I think it's the stop-start traffic on the M6 which is doing it... Got 19-20 mpg overall last week.

Fixing the carb is the way to go then. Thanks for input folkes.
