help cant get van to start

Post by sandwedge »

Well it looks like the puddles at the weekend have done their worst.

I turn the key dash lights up I can hear relays or pumps starting in the engine bay, but nothing starter doesnt kick in at all.
Its my guess that its a starter motor problem probably the solenoid.
I have a couple of question van started fine all weekend no issues started monday after about 10 turns of the key.

No not a sausage.

So is it:
1. starter solenoid, and how do I test
2. Is there a starter relay somewhere, if yes where would I find it.

Engine is a 2:1 DJ

Thanks folks.

:ok

Hehehe... pesky petrols,my doka does this every time I go near deepish water. This is how you fix it.

1 Get a club hammer.
2 Whack the starter motor a couple of times.
3 Start your engine as usual.
4 Use it for a week then the starter will give out totally.

Changing a starter on a petrol is abit fiddly the first few times you do it, but after a while its becomes not to bad. When you put your new one on rub abit of gasket seal around the edge to keep the water out, again not as easy as it sounds. Yet another problem diesels dont suffer from. no starter relay.

if batt voltage good " can test by putting main beam on and cranking starter if lights bright chances are batt good "

next try and wiggle trigger wire at starter. will be the thinner wire going to solonoid

possibly use main feed in to starter " big wire to batt " to bridge to trigger terminal " best to remove trigger wire and make little jump lead " or screw driver works sometimes.

if still nothing hit solonoid with brick / hammer / suitable object " dont break it " re try with trigger wire re fitted

check gearbox earths.

if still no good probally starter duff.

dont bump start in g or reverse.

Ok gents thing I checked

I have good battery charge.
Have checked gbox earth and engine earth both ok
Have wiggled wires to starter all connected ok
Starter was sealed when Aidan and I put the gearbox back in, so should not have let any crap in.

What I dont understand is why it suddenly started Monday after about 10 turns of the key and then started first turn of the key later that day.

I think jet washing it done something other than cleaning it :x

And which syncro has the greatest permissable wading depth...? 1.9 carb DG
Like I'd know
Going to get the "troublesome one" back at the weekend to nick the carb off it, so it'll be wall-to-wall T3's and get the syncro running :D

Think I take it off and clean the contacts first. Then if that fails use the lump hammer :D then when that fails take it off and replace it

The starter commutator might just be glazed over due to water/mud, might be tracking from arcing, might have blown a segment or two from the comm. Maybe just the solenoid is full of cack.
Get it taken off, dried out and tested first.
