Flywheel off to remove Spigot bearing probs

Hi there all,

I currently have my gearbox out as it needs to be rebuilt (when funds become available). (1987-1900cc, 5 speed petrol)

Following advice I've checked the spigot bearing and it seems to be a wee bit broken up, so will require changing.

Some advice here would help no end....

Firstly I have the clutch out, which was easy enough.
Now do I need to remove the flywheel to get the spigot bearing out?
I had a quick try to loosening the allen bolts on the flywheel and they were already pretty rounded off. They also seem
seized in there. So I stopped to ask here before ruining the whole job!!!

I've also read that you can't get replacement bolts anymore so drilling them out, even slotting the heads would be a no-go......

yes fly wheel off
you can reuse them ..though that's no good to you.
But they are available
before you drill if they are as rounded as you suggest try hammering a torx key in

Any idea where I can source them? Just looked at the GSF brochure and the JK site and no sign there...

It would have been much better to replace the bearing without the flywheel coming out eh!!!

Cheers Kev,

I hoped it was just a matter of pulling the bearing and replacing it!!!

If I can get hold of the bolts at heritage, what else do I need to change if anything? See I've never taken a flywheel off anything before,
so have no Idea what's gonna be behind it!!!!!

why remove the flywheel to change the spigot bearing ? Just get the slide hammer on it and pop it out then fit new one, it's in the crankshaft but flywheel isn't in the way

I thought it had a retainer???

OK OK.. my bad, So if you have a slide hammer or can make one that can fish this little thing out, you don't need to remove the flywheel

Wow, suddenly a lot of work and hunting now seems a bit better,
I've got a slide hammer here somewhere.

One day I'll be able to do things on my own!!!

How did you get on with the slide hammer nad re-fitting the bearing...??

I have to attempt the same in the coming weeks and wondered how you got on any advise and was it easy to re-fitt the new bearing?

Hi Nick,

It came out easy enough eventually...
My slide hammer didn't have a fitting small enough to fit through the bearing to the back edge, so I got an M8(i think) bolt screwed into the hammer and ground the head down until it would pass through the old bearing easily. Pushed it through the bearing, located it on the back lip and gave it a knock or two before moving to opposite side and repeating. It does slip off a lot but persevere!!!

Refitting was easy - although give the inside of the shaft a good clean out first to get rid of any rust/debris/broken bearing rollers, before pushing the (greased) bearing in. It's a tight fit though. I used a piece of similar sized dowel to tap it into place.

If I managed it as a fair novice laying down on a gravel driveway anyone can!!!

Or use a larger bolt/lump of metal ground down (IIRC I used a M14 or 16) so it will only just pass inside the bearing, pack the bearing and cavity with grease, intert the bolt/lump and smack with a hammer.. the bearing should pop out..

Locked
