on my way home in the van I first noticed a red light that popped next to the battery, then within a matter of minutes, the temperature gauge shot up, I knocked the fan of to hot and full blast and the air blowing out went from red hot to cool almost instantly. Sat in traffic on the flyover near the trafford centre there's no hard shoulder so had to chug on, heading towards the next available turn off I pulled off, just as something went pop at the front of the van. then the temp gauge came down to normalish and it got me home. Sadly when I got on the drive I noticed I had dropped quite a lot of water down the drive and that it was running from the front of the van.
there was also steam coming from the front vent...... any idea's . i'm fearing the worst....?

The reason the temperature dropped after it went pop is that the water temperature sensor can't sense the temperature of the water if there's no water to sense the temperature of. So to speak.
If you're lucky you may have got away without any damage.
Red light means STOP....... maybe you couldnt stop somewhere safe imediately.. but should have pulled over to see asap.....
You may be very lucky and get away with it... but dont be surprised if after replacing the hose thats burst , you find other leaks or the engine wont hold water or pressurises the cooling system....
d'oh, put the fan belt back on, water needed about half a litre, oil showing bob on, went round the block, shoulda put my cannister on the block, 3 mins of engine running.........krakatoa....eruption... steam...D'oh thats way the all say they all say d'oh.
