Re: Broken Down please help
Have you looked underneath? Is there anything hanging down? Could be cv joint bolts come loose and the driveshaft's come away from the gearbox. This happened to me (or rather he wife) when I forgot to nip them up after greasing and refitting the cv joint.

If gears feel ok then that probably knocks the gear linkage theory out the window!
Possibly a CV joint come undone on one of the rear drive shafts. Check either side of gearbox and further out at the wheel to find these.
Or a clutch issue possibly, not likely though.
Where abouts are you, someone may be able to help if local.

Re: Broken Down please help
Another possibility is broken CV bolts on outer end of drive shaft - had that happen THREE times over 20 years. In fact I'd know the sound immediately if I ever heard it again.
Fit decent splined bolts. From VW they're almost £2 each but a guy on ebay does them a good deal cheaper. Otherwise, yep could also be collapsed CV joint. Only way you'll know is to get under there and look, jacking up each rear wheel in turn may help finding it.
