The yanks have the2.1 mv at 95bhp where we have the 2.1 dj at 112bhp
is there any reason this engine cant be tuned up to dj standards
2.5 WBXer

well it's unusual for you lot not to have an opinion or comment
People fanny around with their air-cooled engine all the time is that because they have no choise
it's just easier to rip it out and replace it with a subaru or something else.
It would be cool to have a VW WBXer to kick subaru's asre for a change.
Oh well

Re: 2.5 WBXer
DJ isn't tuned it's just a higher compression 2.1 with a less sophisticated engine management system, higher emmisions v more grunt and higher octane fuel required for full quoted power
if you have the money then you can build up a bespoke engine and run whatever ignition system and fuel you like and tune it to you hearts content but as you can see from go westy prices it doesn't come cheap, that's why the subaru is popular because it's a cheap ish upgrade/replacement when you need a new engine and are readily available for spares and replacement if that goes bang whereas your expensively built low volume wbx will always be very expensive to fix if it goes wrong.
There's a limit to how much power a pushrod engine can make reliably, that's why multivalve ohc engines came along, they are easier to maximise power and reduce emissions because of ability to load and discharge cylinders. If the Golf had been rear engined then VW would have built a 16 valve ohc wbx and we'd have that instead of the cheapo type one one with a water jacket on we got and now we'd be megasquirting them and the like and there would be lots of aftermarket tuning parts available, but alas it was not to be

Re: 2.5 WBXer
WHS^^^^^^
Depends on how much cash you are preppared to throw at it... anything can be done..
I have a NOS set of original Oettinger 2.5 pistons and barrels that could be built up into a 2.5 wbx.. but the cost and work involved is heavy...
The wbx wont ever produce the power of a scooby... so thats why its a popular conversion.. once the conversion cost has been invested in, if a replacement engine is ever needed, its a pretty easy and cheap....
Of course, some of us a rather odd and like the wbx, it has some virtues... so I am in the throws of building a couple of improved wbx engines to give more torque and power, improved efficiency and other mods to keep/improve reliabilty...
