what engine code ok for TDI or TD convertion?
http://www.autoshoppingcenter.com/Volks ... scode.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The above nice list of VW models and engine codes gives a list that includes AAZ and for TDI's like eAFN and 1Z. How can one know which one would be good for as a donor for a T25?
Is year and VW model unimportant as long as it is a AAZ or AFN or 1z for TDI convertions? I had a chat with Simon at Brickswercks and he said the AFN 110 BHP is not ideal. So I guess some AFNs are ideeal while others are not.
How can one tell what is good and not good?

AFN is the 110hp - good engine. You'll need custom engine mounts etc for it.
1Z and AHU - similar to above, lower power (90hp)
AAZ - easier install, can use all the 1.6 TD engine bits to make it almost bolt straight in. AAZ is not a TDi
TDi's really need a custom built gearbox to match the way they produce power, much lower down the rev range

Hi Ollie,
I'll give you my two pennyworth. The AFN is a good engine indeed as monsho says, but the bhp of tdi engines depends on many things. The 1z and AHU are virtually identical, with the only difference being in the turbo they used (AHU a little more max boost I think), and I think it had an 11mm fuel pump, and the 1z a 10mm.
The AHU and 1z fit well in an engine (look at my garage picks of the engine). Russel at Syncronutz sorted mine out as it was initially a bit of a mess - he is a total guru at this stuff. You need an intercooler, and you need to make sure the ECU is in the dry if you going for "fly by wire". Russel also builds the Tdis with mechanical pumps which are favoured by a lot of people. I like my electronic set up as I can have cruise control and slightly better fuel economy.
The bhp depends mainly on the turbo, the injector nozzle size (you might need a bigger pump if you go really big), and then a remap. The advantage of the stock 90bhp 1z (with .184 nozzles and the Garrett GT15 turbo), which are quite common, is that you can probably manage with a normal 215mm clutch without burning it out. If you go 110 you will definitely need a modified flywheel to fit the 228mm clutch or it will slip.
I run bigger wheels and a 3H gearbox, but as monsho says you should really think about getting in touch with Aidan for a box that will take the torque and will run at lower revs. I'm happy for the moment going around at 65ish (I can do 80 but it's very loud
), but when I get the cash together I'll get a bigger clutch, stronger and longer gearbox, vnt turbo and bigger injectors. For the moment I'm happy with my setup. Some people say that with a 1z and 0.7 fifth for example it doesn't have quite enough power to pull up hills.
I think I read somewhere that the AHU block fits without having to modify the engine cover, but the AFN might need it modifying to fit the pump. I may well be wrong about this.
Anyway - I'd go for a 1z and then mod it if you want more power. There's hundreds of posts about modding tdis on the web - they are great engines. Even really cheap mods like the switched "evry mod", which is very popular in the states... I couldn't possibly comment
Hope some of that makes a wee bit of sense at least!

Re: what engine code ok for TDI or TD convertion?
I'm running the same as Ewen
1Z with 3H box and bigger wheels. I find it fine, it's never going to be a nice relaxing cruiser, but will sit at 65-70 all day up and down hills. Most of my driving is on good A and B roads, so I can just leave it in 5th most of the time as it will pull from 30mph, makes it really easy to drive and great on fuel.
It's got a chargecooler and superchips on it, with the standard clutch and is working fine at the moment.

Hello James,
this may be taking this thread off on a bit of a tangent.... you went with superchips? How much more bhp did you get? Standard clutch still fine? Do you mind me asking how much it cost to get a superchip? I was wondering about upsolute, but I'm planning on winning the lottery so might do it with bigger injectors and a new turbo

Re: what engine code ok for TDI or TD convertion?
It took me up to 115bhp and and extra 60lb/ft, but it's putting out close to the original max (90bhp) just after 2000rpm. It made a big difference, not quite as much as going from 1.6td to tdi, but not far off. I did have a problem with one of the chargecooler pipes coming off after fitting the chip, but a good cleanup and stronger clip and no problems for the last 1000 miles. Most poeple suggested getting the gearbox done, but I don't do much motorway driving, so i'm going to stick with mine for now.
The clutch is standard, but only done around 2000 miles on it, no slipping at all (yet)
The chip cost £110 second hand, but was and original superchips chip, with all the paperwork etc. I'm going for bigger (should see another 20bhp and 40lb/ft, followed shortly by a clutch !!

Re: what engine code ok for TDI or TD convertion?
That sounds good. Are you still using the original Garrett Turbo? When you say bigger - are you going for bigger injectors?
I've been told if you want to go for bigger injectors, you should also got for a hybrid or vnt turbo, and a remap to cope with that... All seems quite a lot of hassle to me - vnt requiring vacuum N75 valve, new manifolds etc.... I'd like to be able to drive around at 70-80 at low enough revs to keep the engine happy and decent mpgs without dying on hills. I'm wondering about a 0.7 5th and .205 injectors with a cheeky switch for sensor fooling when it feels like it wants a bit more bhp
(Then of course a bigger clutch with a 1z flywheel and possibly input shaft)
Thanks for telling me about your setup - there are so many options, but it's nice to know of one that works...

Re: what engine code ok for TDI or TD convertion?
Meant bigger injectors (with my chip probably altered again), stock turbo, too much hassle to change, and probably not enough benefit.

Are you runing the evry for your switch, not tried myself, but meant to give good results.

Re: what engine code ok for TDI or TD convertion?
Hi James,
nice choice - I've read about them. Are you just going to install the nozzles and order them from the states? There's a bosio spint as well which are 205 and supposed to be good. I'm no expert on the turbo, but the experts seem to recommend changing it. You might be interested in the machined flywheels they've got on futbus:

I think brickwerks do the input shaft too if you don't want to use the wasserboxer 228 friction plate. You probably know all this already.
I've done the wiring for the holding switch evry mod with potentiometer on the dash, but won't be taking it out until next weekend - I'll let you know what it's like on stock and what resistance I use. I'm going to be pretty conservative! With a tune it'd be different for you to be sure and with those enormous injectors it'd probably just work to cover the cars behind you in black smoke!
Where are you thinking of going for a remap? I know upsolute are supposed to be pretty good.
Nice to find somebody else messing with their Tdi!
