As you say....chips and so rust, arise due to stones and other objects being thrown up by the road wheels. The petrol tank is not in 'the line of fire' and doesn't get chipped like other underbody areas. In my opinion, Hammerite remains one of the best 'outdoor' paints available. If you were talking sills/wheel arches etc I wouldn't have recommended it.
The greatest advances in underbody treatments and hence longevity, were seen in the mid 80's with the introduction of rubberised anti-chip pain treatments. As a consequence you just don't see modern vehicles rotting like they used to. It is easy to assume that everything is best treated with these products and whilst it will do no harm at all it isn't really necessary to use them where the threat of stone chipping is negligable.

Just rung a body shop and they suggested leaving the factory paint and using Gravitex.

I've just cleaned the old metal filler neck and its remarkably immaculate! It was sprayed with Waxoyl.
