Footstep rubbers - anyone replaced with chequerplate

Post by folkers »

I have just welded in some new plates onto the footsteps which were corroded. Just wondering if anyone on here has fitted chequerplate or anything similar as opposed to the standard VW rubbers?

I thought I may as well have a play around with them, as I don't really like the look of the rubbers, and don't really want to drill holes in my fresh steel!!

cheers

You have to have both metals immersed in an electrolyte to create galvanic corrosion and even then it would only be the aluminium that would be affected.
If you do use silicone to fix them in place, make sure it's not the acitic cure type of silicone as this will eat away at both metals in a short time and you'll be doing your welding again!

Hello,

Rivets in chequerplate, not pretty.

Coachworks use Sikkaflex PR 100 to glue side panels onto aluminium bus chassis. This is a mastic, but I've always used an air mastic gun, might be a bit hard on the wrists from cold with a hand mastic gun. Preheat in hot water, or on radiator first..

Oh, and I agree about corrosion, mix metals and there will be rust, or oxidation , or whatever you want to call it,

Oh, and dirty rainwater makes an excellent electrolyte

Cordialement,
