Stripping back the dreaded Hammerite!

Was like it when we brought it.
Well, Ive put up with it for a year but now its got to come off!!! 1) to replace various panels & 2) cos I want to rustoleum it.
so has anyone had to do this??
obviously there are a few different ways to go for this - heat & scrap, industrial sanding or Nitromorse - unless anyone else has any suggestions.
so which do you think is best?????

mine was hammerite when i got it..the boot still is.when i rolled it last year i just went crazy with the orbital sander.to get it off i was down to 40 grit then went to 120 then higher for the final scrub.it took some doing and i hated the thing at the time and had to keep leaving it a day or so then go back to it.some of it praps wasnt done properly but i just wanted to get some rustoleum on it and use it.the rollering turned out ok but my bad prep saw the rust coming back before too long.
gonna have a go at spraying it next with rustoleum now ive replaced the rear arches and done some other stuff to it.tbh at the mo its looking a lot worse than the hammerite job i originally bought it with..but its all holding the rain off till i get chance to sort it
anyway..sanding it is a bitch

Oh dear! Dont think any of the options are gonna be easy, but it sounds like we are going down the same route.
got my arches ready for replacement and I know its gonna be a long slog but its gotta be done.
Did you buy the rustoleum DVD? or just go off the info on here?
was the finish because of the sanding back? or the finishing on the rustoleum?
Im starting to like the idea of chucking a barrel of Nitromorse over it!

i did mine pre-dvd but looked at all the info time and time again.its something you just have to do to get confidence up in yourself and the first time you touch the van with the roller you wonder how its gonna turn out.i found it didnt look that smooth just after rollering it but after 10 - 20 mins it was like magic how much better it was.
i had a spray gun when i rollered it but wasnt confident to use it on the van for the top cpats as id never used it before but rollering it gave me a bit more confidence to try it out

im not that clued up on paining stuff to be honest but what the hell eh,in for a penny and all that.
one mistake i did make when i sanded it first time was paint reaction,i bought some undercoat in a rattle tin so when id sanded an area down i could spray it on and see if it was smooth,but it didnt like it.where id left the slightest bit of hammerite it reacted badly so i gave up on that and bought some barcoat that was ready to spray out of the pot.thats the first time i used the spray gun and it turned out ok for barcoat and showed me any problem areas that needed sorting before the top coats went on.

Same as i did, im sure theres alot better out there, The Mrs has covered in daisys so looks ok, it does the job and the kids love the weekends away.

I think you can get Hammerite capable paint stripper.
Give "Hammerite" a call and ask their advice.
I believe the number is on the tin.

...all of which illustrates WHY you should never paint the body of a T25 with Hammerite. Someone asked ages ago whether Hammerite would be tougher or better than Rustoleum. Just don't do it....

hammerite aint a patch on rustoleum..anyone who has decided to do it..DONT !
the finish was terrible on mine..id say a bit smoother than wood chip and it had gone dull realy dull,more of a matt finish and every bit of dirt showed up in the rough texture

I have actually used Hammerite on mine - on the inside of a sill. Not sure its much use anywhere else though. Oh and did the driveshafts but only because it makes them simpler to clean down and handle.

I have hated the hammerite since day 1 - but that is the reason I got the van so cheap.
Im hope no one in their right mind would use hammerite as a paint job - I am sooo embarassed when we go out in it but had to wait for it to 'go off' as the bloke had only painted it 3 weeks before selling it - and we had to wait for it to dry then to see what he was trying to hide!

Mines hammerited and it's not a bad job nothing a compounding won't sort out everyone who sees it complements it.

It's down to prep work and patience anyone could try 2 PAC and mess it up. Then again mine was treated to rust treatment then etch primer then red oxide then hammerite then laquer it took me two weeks to do it baremetal.

So don't be to hard on hammerite
