Re: power loss .help .
hi,,,,,,nope the engine doesnt over rev just flats out in third , so ok first / second .into 3rd .. then ended up flat crawling it back home ,,, ocasionally stopping to kind of repower for 1st & 2nd power up .since >> electric pump seems to tick away ok on tickover , ive got the top off it now , the filter before the pump looks grubby inside .>>but maybe that perished ended rubber petrol pipe ( which ive not replaced yet , just cut it shorter , job seemed fine ?) nr right hand side carb could have caused semi blockage . ie like when the engine needs more fuel its forcing it to block . ??? just dont know what to do first ,>>> its not easy when you have to "book in for mot ">just to test drive it up and down the road ! .shall i check plugs for rich or lean mix . ??? to start ??????

Re: power loss .help .
If the engine runs and revs when its in neutral or with the clutch down I can't see how it can be a fuel problem? I know this sounds stupid, but you're not shifting into 5th instead of 3rd are you?

If you're going to put a new fuel filter in it might be worth draining the petrol thats left in the tank and putting in a gallon of fresh fuel. Also if the engine has been run in a spray bay is it possible that the air filter has got clogged up with paint fumes / particles?
Strangely I haven't got a fifth gear either.

Re: power loss .help .
we had this prob on a mates Aircooled motor and it was the fuel filter pipe crimped and couldnt supply enough petrol.
regardless of the earlier poster it has to be fuel related imho

Re: power loss .help .
if its been sat six months then the hydraulic lifters will be de pressurised and will tak a time to re pressure to bring the engine back in tune
let it idle on your drive for about 15 mins with a few red line revs and it will sort itself out.
if thats not working then your carbs will have dried the gaskets out and will be letting in air they will swell up again once fuels run through them a while.
+ all the above
regards doug
+ are your brakes binding check wheel after a little run and see if they are to hot to touch

Re: power loss .help .
I'm more than happy to be wrong, but why would an engine running at say 2500rpm in first & second gear need more fuel to run at 2500rpm in third or fourth?
If fuel has got anything to do with it I'd think its more likely to be a choke problem?

I would put money on it being fuel starvation, pushing a van along in first or second is easier than 3rd or 4th, to maintain speed in the upper gears with an engine struggling with fuel starvation will be harder, an engine running on 3 cylinders could still reach max speed in 1st or 2nd but may not manage say 3rd.
pull the fuel pipe of the carb inlet, check to see if you have a small metal guaze type filter in there ( im not an expert on air cooled motors ) clean and refit , also change the inline filter especially as it looks dirty.
If still no joy, whip the jets out of the carb and make sure that they aren't blocked.
