Eric, I think we got pretty close, which wasn't really the idea... thought my new specsavers were quite good until that series of lanes, last year drove both without such drama, something's wrong and they're not even bifocals

I've been mentally compiling the music to accompany my first video but I need a camera first!

Anyway, we duly went off to the shops on Tuesday and purchased some new tree hugging strops and a winchy thingy.

I'd put my faith in these any day, rated at 1.8 tonnes each - aquired via the Chobham Tank factory closedown auction for pennies:

I've never been too sure about the very fine sandy mud on them, though Anyone got a Geiger meter? I bet there's traces of depleted uranium on them

If anyones got a Hi-Lift a worthy accessory is the chain sets you can get for winching. Years ago I did quite a lot of winching with a hi-lift (other than another vehicle and a decent recovery rope it was the only gear we had, probubly once every couple of years we'd get something so stuck we'd have to borrow a Tirfor though (this was all on private land)). The main problem with winching with the HL was you waist a couple of ft rack travel tensoning the rope so a 5ft jack doesn't give much travel and a 4ft rack would be near useless. After all this I got to demo a proper chain set and that made all the difference - it alows you to reset the rack without looseing the tension so you can winch metres with relative speed (whilst breaking a sweat obveously, its not electric!) Not a bad poor mans Tirfor I think especally if you already carry the jack.
About time I bought myself another hi-lift (I swapped the last one for my first series 1) and I think I'll definately get some chains for it unless I've somehow aquired a tirfor by then, and even then given the bulk of a tirfor your likely not to keep it in the vehicle ALL the time so there is a chance the smaller chain set could save the day.
