We have found that machining a sh!t load of material off the back of a TDI flywheel isn't that great.
It makes the throttle like an on off switch and makes stop start driving, and just plain setting off a pain in the ring.
Don't get me wrong, it does work, but they are a bit odd to drive.
I've just made the sh!t plate to go between the engine and box in stainless sheet so you get the advantages of a dirty great heavy flywheel but can keep the "pooh" out of your bell housing.
We also have TDI input shafts so you can just use what the TDI was supplied with.

I'm not sure if there is enough room to machine a 215mm flywheel to accept a 228mm friction disc and pressure plate?

Well we will find out soon enough ... its only 6.5mm a side! I can afford to scrap off a few JX flywheels in trying!

but with unmachined TDi flywheel you can't remove sump with flywheel fitted can you ?
I guess there's not many times you'd need to, but a bit of a pain if you find you do
