24v eberspacher from 12v source?

Post by Special Boy »

Does anyone know the best way to run a 24v eberspacher (ebay mix up) from a 12v leisure battery ?
I have heard that inverters for this can be expensive and kill batteries. Not sure if internal components can be altered or is it a lost cause!
Any experience welcomed as i will probably get earache and a cold shoulder without heating this year!

If I'd bought a 12v heater and received a 24v one instead I'd send it back. You can get 12vdc to 24vdc converters (google) but they are expensive depending on what the current demand of an Eber is.

I would say get rid. A diesel ebber sucks a hell of a lot of juice from the leisure battery on startup. Combine that with power drain to convert 12 to 24 volts and you're gonna have nothing but trouble.

Not so sure about that. I do have a recollection that someone on here managed to do it. 24v versions go for chickenfeed compared to the 12v ones so worth a try at least.

No doubt it can be done. Whether or not it's worth the effort and expense is another matter entirely.

£20 for a converter. No effort unless connecting wires together is too much effort for you.
I've posted before on it hence "search"

Not borne out by practical use - I run 4 (2 in vans,1 in a boat and one in a workshop) 24v Webastos from 12v with no problems whatsoever - obviously you have never done it otherwise you would not make such a statement.

No. I had the good sense to buy the correct one in the first place.

At twice the price of a 24v one no doubt. Is that good husbandry?

Thank you Oldiebutgoodie, had a feeling it was you but it was a while back. I know of others that have done it in other vehicles with great success.

Easy to spend too much, lateral thinking scores more points in my view.

Base your choice of heater on the converter that you can source - Maplin do a laptop converter (£40 but often on offer at £20) that gives you 150w @ 21v which is sufficient for 24v Webasto Airtop 2000s. Victron do more powerful ones but the price is high. Complete 24v Webasto airtop systems can be picked up from ebay at £100 - £150.(often less or source from a scrappy)
