Colors, colors...

Post by Blueconundrum »

So, I have a 1986 Syncro on the way, and I know I'll be doing a Rustoleum roller paint job on it. Painting is a long way off, it has some engine and body work to be attended to first, but I'm a student of art and I can't help trying to envision how it will look. Opinions?

If I had any Flash coding abilities, I'd make an auto color picker out of this image. If you have Photoshop I can send you the layers if you'd like to play with color choices.

I'm leaning heavily towards the industrial orange or yellow, but I think it's a temporary kick. Part of me has sort of always wanted a yellow and black vehicle, though.
If you'd like me to put together a color combo you're trying to visualize, post some swatches and I'll help you out.

You might be a little biased there

Do you have any trouble with the black roof? I really like the way it looks but I'd imagine it might turn the van into an oven? I'm going to be turning my passenger tin-top into a custom camper (no pop or hightop, just putting in custom fridge, stove, bed, cabinet etc) so inside comfort is a concern were I to, say, park it on the beach to camp a few days.

I'm thinking about taking the lower parts that are black and Rhino-lining them instead of just painting - I probably won't be doing super heavy off-roading, but I'm a paraglider pilot and occasionally the way up to launch can be sketchy dirt tracks.

Also, what type of Rustoleum should I be looking in to?

The black roof aint too bad. Gets a little warm inside but ya got windows and doors aint ya? Keep some of the heat for the night time. Can't help with the rustoleum, mine is sprayed with car paint.

Well, unfortunately, I am a Yankee Doodle girl... it seems that the rest of the folks on my side of the pond don't have such nice resources and forums for these beloved VW Vans. I especially like the wiki.

I think I might be favoring some type of burnt orange, with black trim, perhaps with blue or gray accents (trying to think about matching the interior, too - I know for sure from having a silver car with black seats that black upholstery is a horrible idea). The computer I'm on right now doesn't have Photoshop, I'll have a better mockup in a bit.

Hells bells!....now that id like to see! There was a thread recently discussing the ideal colour for a T25, the idea being that certain vehicles suit particular colours etc. The general consensus...very general .....was that white was the most effective colour. So why not take this to a higher level and go for pearlescent or opalescent white, the kind of thing which the main vehicle producers are recently going for in a big. They look great.

....mine's metallic porsche plum....so i'm told!

I briefly considered plum or aubergine. I don't think I would ever paint it all white - they always look dirty. I briefly considered a two-tone sky blue with white pearl - sort of a "good flying day" car - Cloudbasecamp.
