Westy Underslung gas tank

Post by bitler1@gmail.com »

The underslung gas tank on my Westy looks pretty rusty and I'm worried about it's integrity every time I fill it up! Thinking about removing it and fitting a standard gas bottle inside the van.

Does anyone have any experience of these tanks and what the chances are of it being too rusty to use? It's been wax-oyled the 4 years I've owned the van. Seems to work ok though?! My Missus stands about 50m away when I fill it up at the petrol station!

Anyone know anyone who could check it out for me in the Dorset/Wilts/Somerset area?

Cheers,

Phil

Some boat restorers have a sonar metal thickness gauge. It's put on the outside of the metal and gives you the thickness thats left. We have one at work when we need to test hull thickness on our craft. Don't know if you have anything around you like that though but I'm sure they'll be happy to check it for a drink and a wet cod!

Thanks Mark, but my Missus has decreed that I have to get it checked out properly! (Not that I'm under the thumb or anything!)

Actually, that's the only proper way to check it!

Yep, we have to have our hydraulic accumulators tested this way every 3 years. It's called N.D.T. 'Non Destructive Testing' .

Cheers Fellas. Just when I thought I could stop throwing money at my van.... Might as well burn £50 notes - would save space in the drive too!
