power steering options

Unfortunately my syncro doesn't have power steering which makes it hard work when parking and when engaging front difflock offroad I have found a supplier of an electric system for £390.00 from ULTIMATE ENGINEERING. Is anyone
familiar with the system and is it viable as I dont have huge biceps !!!

Some folks love 'em for road use, some don't rate them for offroad at all.

If you fit a rheostat into the system you can dial in the power assist you want for the conditions you are in

Probably better off with a decoupler for road use/parking.

Funny you should say that! I was contemplating fitting a decoupler but assumed it would be an expensive option. I belive they were fitted to early syncros in place of the vc ????? I am a mechanic so the fitting would'nt be a problem but where do I source the parts ?

Syncro service has them. IIRC Around £700 compared to your £400. How-ever, decoupler would be seen by most syncro buyers as a plus, where as the electric P/S could be debatable.

Try a 1989 Audi 80 quattro without power steering then get back into the Syncro (which I do, regularly). The Syncro aint that bad!

They were fitted as an option to very early Syncros with the VC but VW stopped doing this very early on as they felt it was unnecessary. The parts are no longer listed in ETKA.

Think I'll just take a course of steroids 'cos according to Syncropaddy decouplers are gay and I'm no shirtlifter !!!!!

I think it more likely that VW kept the de-coupler as an option should the VC cause unforseen problems. It would have provided an easy way out, that could be retrofitted if litigation forced them to take action. This was new technology at the time that had not been proven in any other vehicle.

A decoupler must be a plus if only to reduce mechanical wear and increase mpg in normal road use ? Also an option for easier low speed steering would be a progressive rack. Does such a beast exist ?
