Cheers Aidan thats good of you I may take you up on that, will let you know later on as I will phone round and hope someone local has something so I can fnd out today.
Was hoping to find out this morning so I can get another van sorted as a run around, by the sounds of it I will be lucky to find one that fits.

Re: Stupid rocker gasket
Aidan is sending me the pressure tester tomorrow, very good of him
If the engine needs stripping i need to get the van back to my house, about 5 miles away.
Am I likely to make the damage already done worse, even if I keep the revs up enough for the oil light to stay off?
I really need to get it home as i will be switching the insurance over onto another van, thus it wont be insured anymore
Thanks

Re: Stupid rocker gasket
stop thinking about oil lights and such, fit the gauge where the van is now, and observe the pressures. if it says you have enough so to speak then your ok

Re: Stupid rocker gasket
he's going to fit the gauge then drive it home which will give an accurate reading of the op in real world situation and confirm/exclude any flashing lights or bod issues

Re: Stupid rocker gasket
don't use red heamatite if you can avoid it as it goes off like concrete and can make subsequent removal impossible - anyone ever tried to get an immersion heater element out of a tank after 20 years -difficult if heamatited in with with the old tanks but now the copper the tank is made of is so thin you just destroy the fitting and need a new tank

Bad news... engines giving out 15 psi at most so it looks like its stripping time again, time to spend even more money on it.
Re: Stupid rocker gasket
I agree re Aidan's concrete comment and that's why I love it. Of course you need to be careful where you use it but most products these days which are manufactured and sold under current eco legislation simply don't work so well. Examples: Wimpy spitting aerosol sprays, flaking off water based fence treaments, and many other eco friendly or non ozone depletors. Some of these new gasket goo's feel a bit like that to me. As for the stuck immersion heater I found it best to be brave and get it moving with the tank filled with water working on the principle of rocket fuel tanks being held in shape by internaal pressure. Just fitted a combi boiler so got a way with that one from now on.

Full Gasket kit..... Elring pref, Victor Reinz if cant afford Elring... (not sure what others are out there).. new mains and rod bearings, take it apart before ordering bearings.. need to make sure crank is ok, re measure it.... check cam ones.. (rod and cam bearings are same as type 1 so cheap...)
