what do the heat exchangers do??

Post by mozzer »

Hi all I have a 1.9Dg with various ongoing issues one of which is a Hot start prob and exhaust fumes inside whilst inspecting the exhaust I noticed one of the alloy ducting tubes from the heat exchanger had split can someone tell me what the role of the heat exchanger is

thanks in advance

it's just to help warm inlet air at start up in real cold conditions otherwise there can be a slight tendency to ice the carb, but in this country generally the electrical hedgehog inlet heater and ambient temps means it's not much of a problem, so not worth worrying about too much, but tube is only a couple of squid from a good motor factors, JK etc...
exhaust fumes inside, probably leaky exhaust and knackered engine lid seal or leaking tailgate seal allowing fumes to be drawn in from the back of the bus, opening a front window will tend to draw air from inside the van out past the driver so makes it worse
hot start problem
? not cranking - starter solenoid shagged/worn out brushes refurb time
cranking not starting - fuel air spark, timing, compression

The bush/sleeve into which starter pinion engages can cause the starter to bind a little once hot. These are available seperately but often fiddly to remove. Known fault on bugs too.
