Blower replacement system bleed?

Post by joelog »

Yesterday I conducted the horrible process of removing the heater box and pulling it appart to access the fan motor. The switch for the motor still works and the resistor still has conductivity at each setting but the motor was seized. WD40 freed it up but it still does not work. I guess it is toast. I have a new one on order. Here is the question: Do I have to bleed the cooling system after reattaching the 2 coolant hoses to the heat exchanger?

Any info appreciated.

I did but I didn't lose much if any water. If you're careful you should be able to do this job without having to disconnect front heater matrix.

whether you have removed matrix or not, you dont have to fully bleed system:-

assuming matrix has been taken out and cleaned of all the dead flies etc (!) - simply do following:-

1) replace matrix
2) top up BOTH inlet and outlet matrix hoses (should take much as point upwards and are above the engine and radiatior height)
3) attach the hose that goes onto the LOWER of the two plastic matrix pipes
4) place towel under matrix/pipes!!!
5) using a length of pipe, a funnel and a jug, top up matrix til it runs out of plastic pipe
6) quickly attach hose, and Bob's yer uncle.

There will be a tiny air bubble in system, so run her up to temp (til fan's cutting in etc) and blead using rad bleed valve 13mm fitting.

Top tip when reattaching those pesky hoses with the (original) VW spring clips... use pair of mole grips to compress (ie open) the spring and slide it away from the end of hose. Slide hose on then slide back spring to its origina position and release mole grips... simples :D

Leak check before reassembling dash! :ok

Thats excellent. Thanks very much for the info. There were loads of dead flies squashed behind the matrix. There was also a lot of surface rust inside the intakes where the air enters the heater box so I have taken the opportunity to treat it. Although its a bit of a bugger of a job, hopefully it will be ok for the next few years.
