Hey,
i have a 1985 Westy with a 1.9 DG fitted. My water pump has gone on so i will be changing it( it leaks and the bearings are very rough) Whilst looking into my header tank i noticed that the water has an oily kind of foam on the surface, could the break down of the pump cause this or am i looking at something more sinister.
Prior to the pump going the van was running without problems and i managed to stop before any major overheating, as the light came on as the water level dropped.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated

Re: Gunk in my Water
could be remnants of a prev problem where the recent lower water level has boiled off some contamination from inside the engine... if the pump went at "normal" operating temp then there WILL have been some localised boiling... shouldnt be anything to worry about if it was caught quick..
Best to flush the system with clean water and refill with antifreeze and fresh water.. (pref not hard water if you live in a particulalry hard water area.. and DONT use "softened" water..., de-min is good though..)
Has it got an oil cooler fitted? or an automatic gearbox?
