The exhaust saga continues.....!

Post by fairwynds »

Hmmmm

well, the Bluebird twin tailpipe one at £325 IS only the silencer box (thought is was too good to be true!). (<<Cruz, I phoned the company and thats what they said).

Brickwerks not got the early DG system, but they do tell me I can get the complete late DG system (and I do want a complete system) and fit it to the early engine.

Questions:

1) Has anyone done this, and will it accomodate my towbar? As per my first posting, the towbar fits around the standard, early, JK 'Ernst' system, but Im worried that the late, 'side entry' style of s/steel system will foul it....
2) Do you need to use the hanging brackets which are fitted to the late system, if fitting to the early DG engine? If so, what do they attach to?

Would appreciate advice from someone who has the Brickwerks, late DG system. Ideally Id like to look at and measure/compare the system - so if you are anywhere near Sussex, so much the better!

Thanks everso....

Hi Fairwynds

The bluebird site is bloody stupid as it says 'system' which to me is more than just the damn backbox. Thought it sounded cheap. Had I known that would have gone for the speedshop complete exhaust 'system'

Did you speak to Simon at the Brickwerks about the early exhaust? At the time I booked it in he said I had two choices the bluebird or speedshop system. So I ordered the single pipe bluebird exhaust through him. I wasn't aware at the time that it does not include 'the pipe system'. and if I'm doing it I want the pipes doing in stainless too otherwise whats the point only to have to replace them in two/three years?

Unfortunately he's on holiday at the moment so I cannot confirm if he will be fitting stainless pipework too. I'll drop him an email tonight as he may still read them whilst away.

E D I T
When did you contact Brickwerks as I have just read this by Simon earlier in this topic

Infact, should have been here by now, will chase that.

EDIT2:
Bluebird site has now been amended and just states it's the box for £300/£325

Struth, for £300 I'd DEFINATELY be adapting a bike silencer. For that kind of money you could afford to splash out on a really fancy one and still have change for a complete service :rofl

Cruz -
I phoned Brickwerks and Bluebird yesterday.
As Simon is away on holiday I couldnt get an answer re the early DG, as he'd mentioned earlier in this thread, and the staff there werent aware that they might soon be available. Bit of a pain as I need one pronto! They did confirm that the late system (that they do sell) will fit the early engine, its just that the two systems are not interchangable together. So, it seems that the options are:-

Brickwerks late complete system
Wait til Brickwerks (may) have complete early systems
VW Speedshop - however, having read an earlier post (from Lloyd, who has VW Speedshop one fitted) he says 'its street racer loud' - which is not what I want!

Why does this have to be soooo darn difficult? I just want a top quality S/S, guaranteed system, which is as near to as quiet as standard as can be....

Have you looked at Longlife Exhausts? (http://www.longlife.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

Ours will have to be replaced some time soon, so I'm always on the lookout and came across these - don't know how they compare to others.

Hi Fairwynds,

I have just had a JP stainless steel exhaust system fitted to my 1985 DG (early style exhaust) and can thoroughly recommend it. The quality is excellent and it's much quieter than the standard VW system. Also the performance, fuel economy, and "smoothness" have improved significantly. The local garage who fitted it commented that it now sounds like a quiet 911.

The only "issue" with this system is that the early WBX engines do not have the modified engine cradle and associated brackets to hang the silencer, and they are very difficult to get hold of. However a good garage can fabricate supports very easily.

Hope this helps!

Cheers!

To Ollyboy

Just out of interest, how much more mpg do you think you get with a s/s?

thanks both of you...
jamesandhayley - Ive emailed the 'Longlife' people. There systems look spot on, but heaven knows how much they will be - I await with interest. They claim to be the ONLY s/s exhaust supplier that offer a lifetime TRANSFERABLE warranty - which I like the sound of!
Olly - any chance of some pics of the JP system fitted, so I can get idea if my towbar will be a problem...

thanks again everyone - you gotta luv this site! :ok
