Crazy fuel indicator/starting up

Post by SamD »

Evening All,

I recently changed my diesel filter on my 1986, 1.6 transporter and added a little redex following advice, which sorted out the whiteish smoke and lack of power on shallow inclines and following right turns onto shallow inclines. Thanks. I still get a very occassional lack of power on some inclines but then it is a 1.6!

Since the above my fuel indicator needle is being very fickle indeed as is starting it up some of the time. When I bought the van in April the previous owner told me that due to a previous engine change or something (he believed) when it reads 1/4 full it is actually empty. I wasn't that concerned until the above work was carried out as it seems to swing between 1/2 and 1/4 full at random. Have I done something I shouldn't have as I changed the filter as instructed and all went well when starting up the van afterwards as fuel filtered back through? Glow plugs seem to take longer to go out too but again not consistently.

Thanks in advance, Sam
