This was the damage to the heater pipe caused by rubbing on the o/s rear driveshaft sometime in the past. Most likely became unclipped and sagged down at some point in a previous owners life.
You can see clearly that the driveshaft had nearly rubbed all the way through the pipe. There was literally only 1mm of pipe wall thickness left. God knows how long it had been like that.
