No speedo fuel gauge or stereo

Post by fix »

After getting my van back together after the rebuild it seems to have what I think can only be an electrical problem, took the van for its MOT today and noticed the below.

1. The speedo doesnt work, yet the odometer is racking up the miles still so im taking it the speedo cable is working. (last year for a short while the speedo would only work with the headlights switched on, but then it went back to working without the lights)

2. The fuel gauge isnt working at all, yet definately worked before

3. The stereo isnt working, but used to work.

The stereo stopped working while the old engine was in the van, but as i havent really drove it in a year i wouldnt have noticed the guage or speedo so im thinking they also stopped working while the old engine was in, so i dont think i have disturbed anything.

I will take a look tomorrow to see whats up, just thought I would ask on here to see if it sounds like anything obvious? (could just be a fuse I hope, dont even know where the fuse box is but will take a look in the Haynes when I get home tomorrow)

Thanks

well.the speedo is mechanical not electrical so cannot be connected to the lights in any way.have you tried taking the dashpod off and making sure the speedo is connected to the rear of the speedo correctly.late vans have a push on connector that can come unclipped.early vans have a screw on connector.so less likely to become detatched.other than that make sure the cable is still sticking out of your nearside front hub and has a circlip on it.
and make sure the square hole it protrudes from has not become rounded.

the fusebox is behind the glovebox.and the stereo is usually no3 fuse.the stereo could well have an inline fuse as well just behind the stereo.

Thanks for the reply.

I understand that the speedo isnt electrical, but how could it have only worked last year with the headlights on if there was nothing electrical to do with it?

The speedo cable is attached properly to the grease cap, it got rounded last year so i spot welded it to the cap :)

Also the odometer is racking up the miles as normal, so surely the cable must be turning. I will take the cable out at the dash end tomorrow and drive to make sure its spinning round, but im 99% sure it is, or the odometer wouldnt rack any miles up.

Ill check the stereo fuse/s tomorrow, hopefully an easy fix.

The fuel gauge is very weird, never had any problems with it and now its totally dead.
