Sad thing is I don't think they are thick, I think they knew exactly what they were doing.

we had the same sort of thing on the surrey lanes about 6 months ago, where some one tied some thin but very strong rope between 2 trees across a lane, along came a motor bike, rember that 30mph is the speed limit. any how he died, i put a post/link up at the time.

i think it should be treated as a murder, it is a diliberate attack!
