the ignition key in my van is a real so n so to turn. I have to wiggle it about and i know at some stage i will break the thing. I think i read a post advising against putting any oil down the barrel. So does this mean that i should just replace the barrel and is it an easy job ? Also is it worth replacing anything else whilst i'm there like igntion switch ?
Only had the van a few months and i'm a novice so any advice much appreciated

Re lock, well as far as I am concerned it's "make or break" anyway.
I once had a door lock on the drivers side that was like that for over a year, (sometimes taking my 5 minutes to get in !) and a quick squirt of WD40 cured it instantly ( I did feel silly having put up with it for a year !!

If it was I, I would try some WD40 and if it doesn't work, or makes it worse, you are no worse off, you will still have a lock to replace (someone will be along soon to discuss that option - tho I did see mention of ignition lock replacement very recently on here - might be worth a search)
p.s. - not putting oil in a lock barrel is because oil attracts dust and the eventual grungy mess can cause the lock "fingers" to become unreliable (as they are operated by tiny springs).

I thought i had seen a post about shorting the electrics if wd40 was sprayed in.....can't find the post now so maybe i made it up !!!

Nah, you will be OK re shorting because WD40 doesn't conduct electricity
