Fridge Fan

Post by Mark S »

Hi there,

I've got an Electrolux RM 184 EGI fridge in a Westy Joker. Recently I had a caravan gas specialist in to remove the fridge, change the 230V heating element, refit it and pressure-test the gas system, all of which he did. I also asked him to test the fridge fan while he had the unit out and then disappeared off to work. Anyway, he said later he thought I was talking about the engine fan, and that he did not even notice whether the fridge had a fan or not, far less whether it actually worked. The fridge is now back in the slot and I cannot be bothered to get it out again. I must confess that until I started researching it, I didn't know that the fridge had a fan either. My concern is that in my 8 years of owning, driving and sleeping in this bus, I have never heard a fridge fan running, nor felt any kind of unusual airflow around the vents, so think that mine may be broken. Can anyone tell me when is the fridge fan supposed to come on? Is it in all the time or only when things get to a certain temperature out back? Secondly, is it normal to be able to tell from within the cabin when the fridge fan is on? The only noise I have ever heard from my fridge is the clicking from the piezo-electric ignition when I am starting it on gas. Is it likely to be a major cause of inefficiency if the fan does not work?

Grateful for any info.

The fan is to help air circulation during very hot weather...
if the fridge is working OK for you .. forget it.

My fan has only ever woked on gas, I think this is the only time they got hot enough to need a fan.

My fan only operates when its atleast 30 degrees outside.

you can test the fan by heating the heatswitch at the back with a hairdrier, the info is all in this wonderful forum

Thanks, all. I take it that the heat sensor is the small component that is visible when looking down through the vent behind the hob, so I should be able to direct hot air at it through the grille - correct?
