I recently fitted a AAZ with JX pump. It start great, pretty much instantly, from cold and runs well. The Only problem is that it does not like a hot re-start! So what I've done is disconnect the glow plug temperature sensor - the result being that the glow plugs always come on no matter what the engine temperature. It now starts within a couple of seconds - although not as good as when cold. Using the timing advance/ cold start knob makes no difference.
Now searching the archives here and elsewhere it appears this is not an unusual problem. I see references to disconnecting the temperature sender and to adding 600 Ohm resisters in series with the sensor.
Now to me, this does not seem right. The hot engine should start without the glow plugs. So possible problems I see are ...
- Injection timing wrong.
- Pump problem when hot.
- starter motor problem when hot
- valve clearances too tight when hot
Now I've never heard of a starter motor performing poorly when hot but what I have done is ... check cam and pump timing twice - pump timing is set to 1mm and cleaned & checked earth straps. With hydraulic head, I can't see how the valves clearances could be wrong. I did a compression test a few months back and the figures are within spec.
So, is it a case of all of the 1.9D engines are like this? or has anyone any ideas?
