HI folks after all the problems I've had recently with the fuel system the van has been running sweet and i went away for Easter and did over 300 plus miles no problem. Then on Thursday on my way back from a wedding disco i was doing in Wantange the power seemed to go. The engine never cut out but i couldn't get any speed up was like driving in to high a gear. You put the foot down but nothing really happened. I stopped the camper revved it up a bit then drove back on the A34 and once i got up speed it ran just fine all the way home. I thought perhaps a blockage had been cleared.
I went to drive it yesterday morning for the first time since i got back. It backfired as soon as i started up the ignition. I crawled out of the drive and it bunny hopped as i revved up to keep it going forward. Was like driving from the off in 4th. Had to keep revs up just to crawl forward but there was a total lack of power and backfired a lot.
I did managed to get it home at a snails pace. The RAC man came out said all my plugs, leads, rota arm and distributor were fine as was the carb jets, filter etc. This was some 3 hours after i got home and then of course sods law kicks in and it started up fine and drove OK on a test run. He thinks it may well be the coil breaking down. I've certainly never replaced it since i bought the van in 99. Said petrol wasn't be burned and was flooding because of this this. Said as i recall that the excess fuel had evaporated in the time since i called him out. I'm no expert so might not of heard this right.
any comments as always gratefully received. It's easy enough to fit a new coil so i'll do that tomorrow.
Cheers
Dave/Hammy

Re: Backfiring, lack of power
If the coil doesnt solve the problem, you might have the same issue as me, secondary throttle diaphram (25 on picture) has a small plastic joint that clips to part of carb has broken leaving me with similar problems. I changed the fuel filter cleaned little one, rotor arm cap, leads, plugs and coil as usual suspects no difference, then notice that the plastic bit had broken stopping the secondary throttle from operating.

Re: Backfiring, lack of power
Did you get this sorted?
Sounds a lot like my stranded in France story (Alternative Fuels Forum), which turned out to be the Ignition Control Unit, the little bx screwed to the bodywork next to the coil.
Look at Brickwerks website, he sells them, and his explanation of when you might need one is just like your description.

Re: Backfiring, lack of power
HI guys cheers for the replays.
I purchased a new coil first from JK but the screws were broken, now have an Bosch one from GSF but alas it's not cured the problem. Still over running but no back fires. I can feel a judder as i drive plus lack of power sometimes but faster i go the better the drive becomes?. Seems to be a bit better with a full tank of fuel?
Some one said it could be the trigger box, i know JK sell them but think i'll take your advice and purchase from brickworks.
Cheers Damien for the info. I am certainly getting to know my way round the carb now!!

Re: Backfiring, lack of power
Hmmm, this sounds like something I'm going through at the moment. It's a recent 1.9l WC recon from Elite, but it's terribly underpowered, sometimes judders too and the fuel economy is appalling. Taking it back to them in a couple of weeks...
Re: Backfiring, lack of power
Same issue with my 1.9 water boxer..........new engine from Elite a few eeks ago and having all sorts of issues (stalling, backfiring, juddering etc) but inermittent!. Did you take it back Peepshow paddy, if so what was the result please?

Re: Backfiring, lack of power
typically when low on fuel you can end up with a weak mixture and lack of power which appears to be your problem have you checked the fuel delivery / fuel filter?
