VW T25 1.6 Aircooled Westfalia - HELP PLEASE!

Post by martinstout »

Hi this is my first post.

We have recently bought the above camper which ran reasonably when we got it. We decided we should get it serviced before we went on any long trips so took it to Manchester Aircooled who did the job. Since then it has been running progressively worse. Stefan at MAC advised us to see a guy at RE Performance in Bury who put the van on a rolling road and tuned it up for us. He found an air leak in one of the manifolds (I think) repaired that and got it ticking over and driving pretty well. Since then we attempted to go to South Wales from Manchester and made it as far as Manchester Airport - awesome! We were cruising along the motorway nicely at a fashionable 90km/h when the van decided to jerk under acceleration with intermittent loss of power. Our speed came down to 40km/h and so I had to pull over on the hard shoulder. When we stopped we noticed we were leaking oil which was smoking as it hit the exhaust but I don't think this is the main problem with the van. I am starting to lose confidence in the local so called experts as with various bits and bobs of jobs they have done have spent enough cash already. I have 2 questions:

1. Can anyone suggest what may be wrong so that I can point whoever the van goes to next in the right direction?

and 2. Are there any other decent garages around Ashton under Lyne / Oldham area that can have a look at this for us.

Just a point to add - we have not driven anywhere since but after a little encouragement the van starts and ticks over fine.

Please can anyone advise me?

Hi mate, sorry to hear of your problems. These running problems could be completely unrelated to the original one. Hard to take when you weigh out money for work and something else goes wrong. Cannot offer any ideas as to whats wrong.
Good luck.

I can certainly vouch for Steve he's a top man.

There is also someone else not far from you. (30 miles/40 mins from Oldham)

He works on nothing but T3's and T4's day in day out and stocks plenty of stuff on the shelf.

Take your van to Simon @ the Brick Yard in Honley nr Homfirth

Give him a ring, though he is usually booked up well in advance, which is a good sign.

Find his number on http://www.brickwerks.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I travel to both of them from Preston!

Also fill your location in on your profile under Control Panel. :ok
