Ignition switch removal

Post by getunder »

1985 2L watercooled. I have removed the key and its barrel in the usual way but for the life of me cannot see how to remove the ignition switch beneath it. There is a metal plate on the side of the main housing- is this involved in any way ? I did this job on a previous 1978 Aircooled and cannot remember any problems. A previous post says it screws to the bottom of the Barrel - Are we looking at the same hymn sheet ? Would be grateful for any help.

Thanks mike . Please bear with me, Yup thats the switch,I have a spare in front of me. I have tried to access the release screw by just simply removing the plastic cowling surrounding the steering wheel and the key and its barrel removed by the usual method. The bottom of the back of the switch is flush against a long steel tube ( the steering column) which is bolted (rivetted ? ) to the dashboard and the lug on the switch is hidden away and no screw head to be seen. What else do I need to remove/loosen to get to it other than remove the plastic cowling surrounding the steering column ? I have of course removed the multiplug from below the switch leaving the terminals on the bottom of the switch flush against the steel tube leaving no room for any screwhead. The angle of the lug relative to the terminals indicates the head of the screw is inside or obscured by something else so what has to be removed to reveal it ? Have explained it as clearly as I can I hope.

Hah, wouldnt have had to go look if it was earlier in the night :D
Did one a few weeks ago as I was selling a set of locks, You have to remove the steering lock assembly from the coloumb . so wheel off, wiper/ind stalks off then lock etc then you will see the little screw,
Unless I am really missing something here?

Mucho thanks metalmickey, I think we've hit paydirt. I think the difficult bit for me was not being told whether the steering wheel etc., had to be removed or not. Now I know I have to I can proceed. Would buy you that Beer if I was there. :D
