Engine Stalling

Post by handsoff666 »

Hi I am an owner of a 1989 1.9 petrol Automatic T25. I have had her for 3 months and she is lovely. However recently when she is warming up she stalls at junctions. This seems to happen around the 5 to 10 minute mark. After driving for a few more miles it stops and she runs fine. She has been no trouble until now. I'm thinking automatic choke problem. Has anyone got any advice or tips. Much appreciated. Cheers, Ade

Hi welcome.
Nice to be able to read a post without me specs on!

you say recent, so it was OK a month ago, two weeks ago, two days....?

what's been done if anything to the engine?

It could well be the Auto choke, if you look in the Haynes there's a simple choke flap setting check.
This is important as the flap should not completely block the throat at cold.
Further to that, when engine is cold remove the pancake duct and look at the flap covering the venturi.
then with the duct still off allow the engine to warm up, watching the flap to see that it opens.

Also, if the service history is dubious, change the plugs and air filter as these are relatively cheap and can have a significant effect on running/stalling. It does sound like choke certainly, but cold (and old) plugs can also cause probs.

Cheers Dudes,
Just to clarify. I have done nothing to the engine. My fiance did do a couple of short runs a day for all of last week and thats when it started. I have read stuff on the web and came across the old wives tale of starting the engine and leaving it running long enough to roll a spliff and then drive off. I thought this was specifically for the Aircooled T2's!! There is no backfiring or spluttering just a very quiet stall when coming to a stop and then i only realise when i come to move off. LOL. Doesnt help that i'm deaf I suppose. Anyway, now I drive round staring at the engine red light to see if it comes on when i approach some traffic lights!!
This reminds me of everyones automatic choke problems of the old days and I dont miss it but it wont stop me from owning a beautiful T25 that makes me feel so chilled when I hit the road :-),..................unless I come to a stop within the 1st 10 mins LOL.
p.s. KevtheRev: Always thought it was time for an eye test!! Happy to help.

Bit of a strange one. Seems to have stopped now and i have no idea why. Have had a look at the points, ht leads and noticed a vac pipe not fitted to the throttle. its the thin clear pipe from the air filter. Dont know if that will make any difference. Fingers crossed she stays ok. :-). Thanks guys

A missing vacuum pipe could well cause it to stall - too weak, too much air at idling, conks out.
