1.6TD timing belt and tensioner

Post by T-3PO »

I need to have the fuel pump timing set on my turd so while the garage are at it i'm getting them to change the the cambelt and tensioner.

Any recommendations of what to buy and where to buy from? GSF? JK? I think quality over price is what I'm after, Id rather buy from Brickwerks but can't find the belt listed only the tensioner.

Also, anything else worth replacing or checking while the covers are off?

I've always got mine from GSF and never had a problem. The belts and tensioners themselves have always been by a reputable manufacturer and just packaged by GSF. But I won't buy wheel bearings from them.

If a garage is replacing the belt, let them supply the parts. If it goes pop it's their responsibility. If you supply the part you will have to pay again.

You know what bigherb, thats a very good point, I never thought of that. The only thing that does worry me is that they go out and buy something thats a load of crap and don't bother to replace the tensioner, perhaps I'll have to ask them to buy it from a specific place and be prepared for the price to get a little over inflated :|

You now have an idea as to what the cost of parts will be so you can see if you are being taken for one when you ask for a cost. I agree with bigherb - if you are getting a garage to do it then get them to supply the parts as it is then their problem if it goes wrong. If you have any concerns, then request that they provide you with a warranty for the work and parts; if it is a reputable garage they will want to protect their reputation so you shouldn't have any problems.

If you are looking to do it yourself then the links above take you to Brickwerks parts store, who also have a good reputation for stocking the good stuff.

£300 to do the job, I almost told them to dos off but in the end we settled on £200 :( to do the pump and valve timing which includes £50 for a new belt and tensioner!

I just wish I had the time to do it myself .... £30 belt kit and another £80 quid for tools and knowing the job has been done properly and with the satisfaction of saying "I did that"

then get them to supply the parts as it is then their problem if it goes wrong.

On the other hand, once it's gone wrong, the expense of the hassle-factor can never be recouped, especially if the valves hit the piston (the worst outcome from a duff tensioner, albeit unlikely)
