Roundhill
Hi All,
Planning a trip to Roundhill for a weekend. If anyone's been before, could you tell me please if there are any pubs/restaurants nearby - within walking distance of the site?
Many thanks,
Stu

I went there a month or so ago and am going again in August,IIRC Its about 4 miles from the closest pub...... Great site tho, my only complaint was that the showers where too hot ! Oh and dont get there any later than 10 30 pm as the lock the gates! I arrived at 10.29 and 30 seconds.... they loved me!

Re: Roundhill
Excellent, thanks for that.
First trip out in our van - new awning, single burner portable gas stove, 12V cool box and a porta potti.. and that's about all for now, so was thinking pub dinner might be a good option.
So - if we popped out for dinner we'd have to make sure we're back by 10.30 too?
Cheers,
Stu

Re: Roundhill
If your going to Roundhill in the New Forest then a trip to Brockenhurst will be downhill all the way there and uphill all the way back! Take pushbikes and vist the Foresters Arms there also great butchers in the high street for BBQ fare.
Venture across the heath (this is a level walk) to the Turfcutters Arms at East Boldre. Stay on the path and off the moor
Google Maps has it all on there.

Great site and our local favourite

Re: Roundhill
Lovely site - we have a big camping rally there each year - but make sure you don't leave any food out, you'll the horses poking their heads in your van (we've a number of piccies of the ponies coming out of one of our tents). The ground is also rock hard at Roundhill, if you're taking an awning I'd pack some hardy tent pegs.

Thanks for the tips - much appreciated. Will try not to turn the van into a horse-box

Re: Roundhill
Sounds like you have all you need to chill on site without schlepping to a pub for dinner.
Why not freeze a spag bol or curry or similar, your milk and other meats (for a bbq) and they will gradually de-frost in the chilli-bin ready for you to re-heat or cook.
Homebase have quite a good little portable bbq on sale at the mo.
Other option is get a fish n chip supper on your way back to camp from a day out.
Have fun, it's a lovely site and we were there on Silky's camping rally last month - didn't leave the site all weekend as the kids were more than happy getting feral in the forest and we had a bunch of water pistols! Hit the beach for a couple of hours on the way back to London on the Sunday arvo too.

Re: Roundhill
Thanks Sarah.
I just happens that Mrs M cooked up a batch of pork casserole on Sunday, so will chuck that in the chiller - good call
Thanks,
Stu

I also have a basic chilli-bin which I use for keeping drinks cold. I freeze 1ltr bottles of water from the tap and pack them around cans/bottles then as the water de-frosts I use that for making tea/coffee and squash for Little T.
I think, altho not 100% sure, the site sell ice too...........

Re: Roundhill
They do sell ice by the bag, not that it lasted very long on the sweltering weekend we chose (about the last time I saw the sun, it's been raining for 10 days solid in Manchester
)

Re: Roundhill
Hi All,
Thanks for your tips etc. We had a very nice weekend at Roundhill. Got there around 19:00 on Friday, set up and heated up stew for dinner. Walked to Lyndhurst and back on Saturday, having lunch in Prezzo there. Good walk, though in all around 12 miles walked that day! Sausages on the BBQ by the van in the evening, washed down with cool vin blanc from the chiller!
Liked the site. Saw several ponies eating from gazebos etc where people had left food out. Like the freedom to pitch up anywhere and the fact that people obeyed the 'quiet times'. Was busy and the water in one of the toilet blocks ran out at 10am on Saturday, but the other two were fine. Long queues for washing up, but expect that in summer hols.
Would advise getting there as soon as possible after the 15:00 check in time as the 'best' areas to pitch disappear quickly.
Really enjoyed our first weekend in the van and have many ideas to implement for next time!
Cheers,
Stu

Re: Roundhill
We used to go to Roundhill when we first got a T25 about 5 years ago. It only used to be £6 per night per van with up to 4 people per van so a very cheap weekend away. But then the Camping and caravan club bought it and whacked the prices right up, new flashy bogs i guess and loads of rules to follow too i suppose. I bet they have one of the little Hitlers running the gaff and staying on there full time for free.
Sorry rant over
Its just a shame really as we liked it their and wont go now through principle. What did it cost to stay their for a night now if you dont mind me asking?

Hey Jed,
No worries - it was £37.50 for two nights. Not cheap, but any means. Facilities were fine, didn't blow me away - have seen better and worse!
There was a certain amount of rule reading at reception, but after that I didn't notice any 'policing' of any type.
Cheers,
Stu
