Just took a closer look at the spare engine I was given with the van.
I was expecting it to be a 2L CU designator but instead it starts with a W followed by 7 digits.
Also the Cylinder bore is only about 90 mm - not the 94 mm on my 2L Aircooled.
Any ideas as to what I've actually got?
Engine number starts with 'W'

Cheers for that Simon.
Apart from barrels and pistons, is evrything else on the 1.7 the same as the 2L do you know?

No, shorter throw crank, crankcase and heads are different. Originaly a Type 4 engine from around 1970 with D electronic fuel injection, was one of the best Type 4 engines really did fly.
